Health Care
As a health care provider for over twenty-five years and a member of the Doctors Caucus, Dr.Gosar has lead the charge in the House to reform the health care system and put forth free market solutions to increase access and decrease costs to the consumer.
The President’s health care law known as Obamacare is, in large part, what motivated Dr. Gosar to run for Congress. That is how devastating he believes this law will be to the future of this country. It is a job killer: The National Federation of Independent Business, the largest organization representing American small business, estimates that the law will cost 1.6 million jobs. It punishes American people and businesses by levying hundreds of billions of dollars in new taxes. Even the economists at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimate it will add $311 billion to the deficit by 2019. It will add nearly 16 million Americans to Medicaid, a program that is failing the very needy for whom the program was designed while sabotaging the budgets of many states including Arizona. As our nation’s baby boom generation prepares for retirement, Obamacare leaves Medicare in a death spiral as current estimates show Medicare Part A will be insolvent in a matter of years. Obamacare is unconstitutional to boot, both in statute and in practice: the individual mandate stomps on the principles our Founders intended while the Department of Health and Human Services has exercised its authority under this law to enact a decision that violates the First Amendment right to freedom of religion.
…and furthermore: Obamacare will NOT lower health costs and will NOT, in millions of cases, enable Americans who like their plan, to keep it.
One of the first bills Dr. Gosar voted for as your Congressman was legislation that repeals Obamacare. Additionally, Dr. Gosar has supported legislation that repeals the most egregious aspects of the law and voted for measures that successfully defund aspects of it while full repeal efforts are blocked by a Democrat-controlled Senate and President Obama.
As the Vice-Chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Health Care, Dr. Gosar has been in the forefront of investigating flaws in the current healthcare system and identifying waste, fraud, and abuse. From delving deep into concerns with the approval of drugs and medical devices, to investigating aspects of Obamacare that will be devastating to businesses, families, and the business of health care – learning what ails our current health care system is key to getting it fixed. Dr. Gosar is excited for the opportunity to reform our current system in a way that empowers patients.
A key component to reform must include a serious look at medical liability tort reform. The threat of medical malpractice lawsuits has decreased access to quality specialists in fields such as obstetrics and neurology, while a Harvard University study shows that defensive medicine costs our system nearly $46 billion dollars. Dr. Gosar understands the importance of medical liability reform to the future of medicine.
Upon election, Dr. Gosar introduced the Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act (H.R. 1150), legislation that eliminates the unfair advantage that the insurance industry has had over patients. This legislation will provide the patient with lower prices and more healthcare choices. This bill passed the House as Representatives as amendment to the repeal of the IPAB board. As a health care provider, Congressman Gosar strongly opposed the IPAB board made up of 15 unelected bureaucrats, created by Obamacare.
